Whether you are upgrading your existing worktop or installing a brand-new kitchen, we can help you to determine which one will benefit you.
Some of the most widely used kitchen worktops we supply are Granite, Solid Wood, Quartz – Silestone/Cimestone and Laminate – Duropal. Below is some information about each type of kitchen worktop which may help you to decide which one will suit your needs and requirements.
Quartz -Silestone/Cimestone
Quartz worktops are not only visually stunning, but also a highly practical choice for a kitchen worktop. Quartz is known for being highly resistant to staining, heat, scratches, chips and mould. The durability makes them easy to maintain and look as good as new in many years to come. Our Quartz worktops come from the leading manufacturer and well-known brand Silestone.
Silestone is a composite which is made up of 90% natural quartz. This makes it extremely hard and resistant, which is perfect for a kitchen worktop.
- Quartz worktops must not be rubbed with abrasive materials (such as metal pads, scouring detergents and wire wool or alkaline and chlorine-based products), wash instead with clean warm water to which a non-abrasive light neutral detergent may be added. Rinse with clean warm water and dry with a chamois leather or dry cloth.
- Do not allow any buildup of salt or detergent on your Quartz worktop. Quartz worktops should not be brought into contact with strong acids or chemicals including paint stripper, brush cleaner, oven cleaner, nail varnish remover or similar products.
- For a longer lasting finish, do not hit your Quartz with something blunt and heavy. It can crack, chip or even break. (The edges are most likely to be damaged if physically abused). We would advise the use of a chopping board as a preparation center to reduce the risk of damage to your Quartz worktop.
- Do not expose your Quartz worktop to excessive heat, we advise the use of a tripod or similar device to place your pans on when taken directly from the hob.
Solid Wood
Solid wooden worktops provide you with elegance and timeless beauty; this makes them perfect for both modern and traditional kitchen styles. As well as being environmentally friendly, wood gives your kitchen warmth and a sense of homeliness.
We currently deal with top manufacturer WEX Trade, who provide us with quality wooden worktops. WEX Trade offers an extensive range of different woods such as Oak, Cherry, Maple, Walnut, Ash and many more. The beauty of solid wood is that scuffs, scratches and dents can be easily repaired by sanding them down, this makes them durable and last for a long time.
Here are a few simple guidelines that need to be observed if the timber worktops and their surfaces are to give a lifetime of good service.
- Always mop up spills of water and other liquids straight away,
Do not allow liquids to stand on wooden surfaces for any period of time. - Always use pan stands and trivets to protect the timber from rough, hot, wet, dirty pots and pans.
- Direct contact from iron, steel or copper vessels can also stain the timber surfaces.
- Always use cutting boards to chop and slice food. Do not cut directly onto the worktops surfaces.
- Clean the tops with a sparing amount of warm water, a drop of washing up liquid and a well-rung cloth.
- It is important that the timber work surfaces are re-oiled at regular intervals to maintain the same condition as when it was first installed. The time span between oiling is dependent on the degree of use and wear they receive.
Laminate – Duropal
Laminate worktops are a stunning yet economical alternative to solid wood, granite and other solid stone worktops. They are the perfect choice for those who are on a budget and want an easy-to-clean, durable and low maintenance surface. Our laminate worktops come from the leading manufacturer Duropal, who offer a wide variety of decorative high-pressure laminates.
Using high quality, synthetically produced materials such as melamine resin, worktops from Duropal are highly resistant to wear and tear stains and scratches. Their laminate worktops are available in an extensive range of colours and textures, giving you freedom of choice and design.
A major advantage of Duropal worktops is that the HPL surface makes cleaning so simple.
- Usually, a moist cloth is sufficient but use washing-up liquid to get rid of any grease.
- Stubborn dirt can be removed with an organic solvent such as methylated spirits or alcohol.
- Brushes with hard bristles (but not wire brushes) may also be used.
Granite
Granite is very similar to Quartz in terms of durability and resilience. However, Granite is a natural stone which does not come in a wide range of colours.
Key benefits of Granite are that it is strong and resistant to scratches and high temperatures. It may be harder to maintain compared to Quartz as it can be porous and harder to clean.
The natural beauty and qualities of granite are what makes it very appealing to many people.
- Granite worktops must not be rubbed with abrasive materials (such as metal pads, scouring detergents and wire wool or alkaline and chlorine-based products), wash instead with clean warm water to which a non-abrasive light neutral detergent may be added. Rinse with clean warm water and dry with a chamois leather or similar. Drainer grooves can, however, be cleaned using wire wool.
- Do not allow any build-up of salt or detergent on your granite worktop. Granite worktops should not be brought into contact with strong acids or chemicals including paint stripper, brush cleaner, oven cleaner, nail varnish remover or similar products.
- For a longer lasting finish, the granite worktop surface can be sealed to reduce its natural porosity. Surface treatments should be reapplied every 4 months after cleaning with neutral detergent.
- Do not hit your granite with something blunt and heavy. It can crack, chip or even break. (The edges are most likely to be damaged if physically abused). We would advise the use of a chopping board as a preparation centre to reduce the risk of damage to your granite worktop.
- Do not expose your granite worktop to excessive heat, we advise the use of a tripod or similar device to place your pans on when taken directly from the hob.
